Experience 1018 in 2018
In the year 1018 the German emperor sent a large fleet to the far west of his empire. At the ‘Flardinga’ settlement, the imperial soldiers met the troops of Count Dirk III. Flardinga’s farmers joined Dirk III. In the battle that follows, the imperial army suffers heavy losses. The remarkable victory of Dirk III in the “Slag bij Vlaardingen” caused a lot of controversy in the empire.
Our apps “Flardinga 1018” en “Flardinga 1018 VR” both tell the story of what went down 1000 years ago, when Godfried van Lotharingen tried to take over Flardinga.
How do you make learning fun? Exactly, you make a game about it! That’s the reason why we started this project. We’ve build this game to make the story of how the “battle of Vlaardingen” (slag bij Vlaardingen) went down a little more entertaining. In this game you will have to work your way through 4 levels, collect money and fight. At the end we will test your knowledge through a fun game just to see if the story is clear to you.
1000 years back in time
This virtual reality (VR) experience will guide you through Vlaardingen/Flardinga as it was back in 1018. With the help of archaeologist Tim de Ridder and reconstructions of research made by VLAK (Vlaardings archaeological office), we managed to rebuild this as real as possible. The hills, the depths, everything is as close to 1000 years ago as possible.
If you want to experience this for yourself, contact us here to make an appointment!
We are very happy that the Gemeente Vlaardingen allowed us to use the beautiful illustrations of illustrator John Rabou. We gained a lot of fun and inspiration from his beautiful work. This is our first game for consumers and we welcome all feedback we can get and we intend to give several updates to our games throughout 2018. We had a lot of fun and excitement in the proces of creating these Flardinga 1018 experiences, we hope our audience in Vlaardingen is enjoying our creations.

The Technasium is a formula for beta education at HAVO and VWO, which has been around since 2004. Centrally within the Technasium is the Research & Design (Onderzoek & Ontwerpen) course, where students in a team work on a real world beta assignment. This prepares the students to be familiar with various sectors, professions, subjects and issues in beta technology, so they become well-equipped for a well-considered career choice.
In each first semester we assign the students of VWO 4 to come up with their own innovative augmented reality ideas. First, we give them a demonstration at the Technasium in Schiedam to inform them about the revolution of AR and VR. The week after they’ll come to visit the Platipus headquarters for some cool demo’s that will inspire them. After that, they’ll begin the assignment. The outcomes very greatly ; an app that helps you loading your luggage in the trunk of your car, predicting the weather with fun animations, previewing a to-be-build house and even show you how to repair your bicycle tire on and 3D printed bike frame.

At this year’s largest European print exhibition for wide format print, FESPA 2017, Avery Dennison presented 18 new colors for their popular Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film, expanding their premium vehicle wrap range to more than 100 colours. But how cool would it be if you could design the looks of your car by yourself?
Platipus developed a virtual reality app where visitors of the Avery Dennison stand at FESPA 2017 experienced how this feature could be applied in practice in the future.
Just put on your VR glasses to be in a virtual garage, where an Audi R8 drives in and stops right in front of you. You can spray paint the car using your own hands. It doesn’t get more intuitive than this. Just choose a color by touching it with your hands from a virtual color palette. Spray paint it on the car by pressing the controller with your index finger. Or use your hands to pick up a sticker. We provided a very limited basic set of tools, so it was really nice to see the variety of original designs the participants came up with. Have a look for your self here.
This project was commissioned by b-creative, who made a lovely Avery Dennison promotion video about the supreme wrapping film.

In 2017, Goally 3D introduced a new layer of fun to collecting football stickers in an album; they augmented them so that the pictures with players, their coaches and even the referee are brought to life! Therefore, Platipus developed the Augmented Reality app Goally 3D.
The interactive sticker albums are enthusiastically received by young and old collectors. More and more football clubs will soon be hooked on this.
Support your local heroes!
At the beginning of 2017, supermarket Jumbo Blankestijn in Oudewater (Utrecht) was the first to publish a collection album in which you can collect Augmented cards of the football players of -in this case- the local football club FC Oudewater. Customers could collect the cards at the store and with the Goally 3D app let the players dance, play Augmented soccer games with them and score some prizes.
In september of the same year, the new football season was kicked off by Albert Heijn Beugelsdijk, which offered the collectable Augmented football cards of the football club the Hazerswoudse Boys.
New updates are expected soon.
